Welcome to the portal of the project ייִדיש לעבט. Within it, apart from developing the dictionary, we work on the textbook of Yiddish language. This project works on the basis of Polish Wikimedia. It’s partner and coordinator will be the foundation that is just being created specially for this aim. We invite you to cooperate with us.

dictionary

At the moment the dictionary contains over 7000 entries, all of which have YIVO romanization, Polish phonetic pronunciation and IPA notation. Almost all nouns have given grammatical gender and plural form. Considerable amount of entries have described etymology, derivatives and synonyms. Some entries have examples of use the word in sentence.

textbook

At the same time at Wikibooks is being created a textbook of Yiddish that together with the dictionary is to provide compendium of the language and support learning of it.

On August 22, in Śródborów near Otwock, during the International Seminary of Yiddish Language that is annualy held by Shalom Foundation, we had the opportunity to present the yiddish lebt project and the Yiddish dictionary to the people potentially the most interested in them. About twenty seminary participants took part in the prelection: students, as well as lecturers from Poland, Germany, USA, Israel and Lithuania. The project arouse interest, sometimes on the verge of disbelief that something like this exists. The most enthusiastic were Polish students of Judaic and German studies. Part of them initially declared the wish to join Wiktionary as editors.

Below is a short photographic relation by Meilenstein.
